SEO Company for Contractors: How to Get Found, Get Recommended, and Get More Leads

SEO Company for Contractors

An SEO company for contractors helps roofers, plumbers, HVAC crews, electricians, remodelers and other trades appear in Google, in the map results and in AI answers when a homeowner searches for help, and turns those searches into phone calls and quote requests. The goal is not traffic for its own sake. It is more of the right jobs, from people in the areas you actually serve.

If you are weighing a contractor SEO agency against doing it yourself, or against buying leads from a marketplace, this guide walks through what the work involves, how homeowners really choose, how to be found in AI search too, and what to ask before you sign.

What an SEO Company for Contractors Actually Does

Contractor SEO is local search work. Your customers are not searching the whole country. They are homeowners within a driving distance of your crew, usually on a phone, often in a hurry. A good SEO company for contractors builds the pieces that decide whether you appear for those searches and whether the person who finds you calls.

Work Area What It Involves Why It Brings Leads
Google Business Profile Correct categories, service areas, services, photos, hours, posts and Q&A It controls how you appear in the map results, where many calls begin
Reviews A steady process to earn fresh reviews and a habit of replying to each one Reviews weigh heavily for trades, and they are a leading reason homeowners reject a business
Service and city pages A dedicated page for each trade service and each area you work in Matches the exact searches people make, such as “roof repair in Tampa”
Listings and citations Matching name, address and phone across directories and data sources Consistent details build trust with Google and with AI tools
Website and speed Fast mobile pages, click-to-call buttons, clear quote forms Most local searches start on a phone, and slow pages lose the lead
Tracking and reporting Call tracking, form tracking and monthly reports on leads, not just rankings You can see which work is paying off and where the leads came from

How Homeowners Choose a Contractor Online

The way people pick a contractor is more specific than “whoever ranks first.” BrightLocal’s 2026 research with more than 1,200 US consumers found that 84% had searched for a local business online in the previous three months, and only 6% said they simply clicked the top result. Most compare a short list on a handful of things, and many of them are things you can influence.

What Decides Who Gets the Call Clear, complete information 32% Most or best reviews 30% Clear pricing or an offer 29% Closest, or able to come to the home 27% Best star rating 27% Quick reply to my first enquiry 22% Share of consumers ranking each factor in their top three reasons for contacting a local business. Source: BrightLocal Consumer Search Behavior 2026 (all local industries).

Fig 1. What consumers say tipped their decision on their latest local search. Figures cover all local businesses, and trades tend to weigh reviews and pricing even more.

For trades and home services specifically, BrightLocal found that star ratings and the number of reviews carry more weight than in any other industry it studied, and that 36% of trade customers cite pricing or offers while researching. The takeaway is practical: show your prices or a clear way to get a quote, keep your listing complete, and make it easy to call.

Just as telling is why people walk away. In the same research, 52% of consumers looked at a business in their latest search and decided not to contact it. The top reasons were negative reviews, unclear pricing and a low star rating. A listing that looks abandoned, with old reviews, missing details or no photos, costs you jobs without ever showing up in your analytics.

Local SEO for Contractors: The Foundation

Whatever else you do, get these right first. They carry most of the weight in the map results and in local organic results, and they feed AI answers too.

A Google Business Profile Built for a Service Area

Many contractors work at customers’ homes instead of from a storefront. Google lets service-area businesses hide their street address and list the areas they serve, which is the right setup if you do not meet customers at your office. Choose your primary category carefully, because it is one of the strongest local ranking signals, and add the specific services you offer. Do not list addresses you cannot back up. Fake locations and virtual offices are a common reason profiles get suspended.

Reviews Earned the Right Way

Ask every satisfied customer, ideally right after the job is finished and they are happy, and make it a one-tap link. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and specific way. Never buy reviews, write your own, or screen out unhappy customers before asking. Google’s policies prohibit it, and the fakes are easy for buyers to spot.

One Page for Each Service and Each Area

A single “Services” page that lists everything rarely wins searches. A homeowner looking for “water heater replacement” wants a page about water heater replacement, with what is included, a price range or how pricing works, your service area, photos of real jobs and a clear way to call. Do the same for each area you serve. Resist the urge to clone one page across twenty towns with only the name swapped. Each page should say something true about that place.

Consistent Listings

Your business name, phone number and service details should match across your website, your Google profile and the directories that matter in your trade. Inconsistency confuses search engines and reduces trust.

Fast, Clear, Mobile-First Pages

BrightLocal found that 73% of consumers started their latest local search on a phone. Test your own site on one. The phone number should be tappable, the quote form short, and the page should load quickly on a mobile connection.

Answer Fast and Track Everything

Ranking only gets you the chance. Among the reasons consumers gave for choosing a business, 22% said it replied quickly after their first enquiry. Give each major source its own tracked phone number so you can see what is working, and make sure somebody is responsible for returning calls and forms the same day.

How Contractors Can Show Up in AI Search

Homeowners are starting to ask AI tools who to call. BrightLocal’s 2026 research found 23% of consumers used AI tools in their latest local search, and 31% use them for local recommendations at least monthly. Yet only 18% of those who used AI felt ready to contact the business it recommended. Most went back to Google to verify details.

That detail matters for you. AI tools shortlist, and Google, your profile and your reviews do the convincing. So the way to appear in AI answers is not a separate trick. It is the same foundation, made consistent and easy to understand.

One Foundation, Three Places You Get Found Google Business Profile Fresh, genuine reviews Service and area pages Consistent listings Structured data (schema) ONE CONSISTENT SET OF FACTS Who you are, where you work, what you do, and the proof Map results Google organic results AI answers and summaries

Fig 2. The same set of accurate, consistent business facts feeds map results, regular search results and AI answers.

Make Your Facts Easy to Verify

AI tools and search engines both cross-check. If your hours, services and service area differ between your website, your profile and your directory listings, you give them reasons to doubt you, and customers will check too. Keep a single master version and update every place at once.

Write Pages That Answer the Question First

Open each service page with a direct, plain answer: what the service is, who it is for, what it generally costs or how pricing works, and how fast you can respond. Then add the detail. Clear headings, short paragraphs and a few well-built tables are easier for both people and AI systems to understand and quote than long unbroken prose.

Use Structured Data

Schema markup tells machines exactly who you are: your business type, name, phone number, service area, services and reviews. It will not rescue a weak profile, but it removes guesswork for anyone parsing your page.

Earn Mentions Beyond Your Own Site

Reviews on several platforms, local news, community sponsorships and trade association listings all show that other people vouch for you. Those signals help in classic search and are the sort of evidence AI tools lean on when they decide who to recommend.

What SEO Can Deliver: Traffic, Leads and Jobs

Everyone asks how many leads SEO will bring. Nobody honest can promise a figure, because it depends on your trade, your city, your competition and how well your office handles calls. What we can do is show how the numbers work. The table below is an illustration based on stated assumptions, not Amigo Softtech client results and not a guarantee.

Funnel Stage Conservative Moderate Strong
Monthly organic visits 600 1,500 3,000
Lead rate (calls, forms, quote requests) 3% 4% 5%
Leads per month 18 60 150
Estimates booked (40% of leads) 7 24 60
Jobs won (30% of estimates) 2 7 18

Multiply the jobs by your average job value, then compare it with the monthly cost of the work. For a sense of scale, WordStream by LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmarks put the average Google Ads lead in home and home improvement at $90.92. At that average, the 60 leads in the moderate scenario would cost about $5,500 in ad spend in a single month, and they stop when the budget stops.

Google Ads Search Metric (2026) Home & Home Improvement All-Industry Average
Cost per click $8.33 $5.42
Click-through rate 6.47% 6.64%
Conversion rate 8.05% 8.18%
Cost per lead $90.92 $66.69

These are category averages that cover many trades, so some specialties cost more and some less. SEO is not free either, because the work has a monthly fee. The difference is that organic visibility does not charge you again for every visitor.

SEO vs Paid Ads vs Lead Marketplaces

Channel Speed How You Pay Watch Out For
SEO Builds over months, then compounds Monthly fee for the work, no charge per lead Slow start, and results depend on competition
Google Ads and Local Services Ads Fast Per click or per lead Leads stop when you stop paying, and costs are rising in many trades
Lead marketplaces Fast Per lead, often shared with competitors You do not own the relationship, and several contractors may chase the same homeowner

Most healthy contractors use a mix. SEO builds an asset you own, and paid channels fill the gaps while rankings grow or when you need jobs quickly.

Contractor SEO Agency vs Local SEO Specialists vs In-House

You have three realistic ways to staff this work. None is wrong, and the best fit depends on your size and how much of the work you want to run yourself.

Option Strength Limitation
Local SEO specialists (freelance or boutique) Focused skill in profiles, citations and local pages, often at a lower price Limited capacity, and content, links and tracking may need other people
Contractor SEO agency A team covering technical, content, local, links and reporting with a process Quality varies widely, so check who works on your account
In-house marketer Knows your jobs and crews, and is always available One person rarely covers every discipline, and salary plus tools adds up

Amigo Softtech is an SEO agency that works across industries, and contractors and home services are among the businesses that depend most on local search. We are not a contractor ourselves, so we do not claim to know your trade better than you do. What we bring is the SEO work, a clear process and honest reporting.

What an SEO Company for Contractors Costs

Prices vary widely, and the headline number tells you little without knowing what sits behind it. Our plans are public. Starter is $2,000 per month, Growth is $3,000 and Pro is $5,000, with a custom pay for performance option. Because contractors depend on map results, local SEO and Google Business optimization matter most, and they are included from the Growth plan upward. There are no setup fees, no long-term contracts and 30 days’ notice to cancel. Advertising budgets are separate.

If you are an established company that wants part of the fee tied to results, pay for performance SEO is worth a conversation. You agree on measurable targets in writing, such as rankings for the services and areas that matter to you, and part of the fee is billed only when they are met. You can compare every feature on our pricing page.

Your First 90 Days

A good contractor SEO agency should be able to tell you what happens and when. This is a realistic outline. Timing varies by trade and city, and a single-town business in a smaller market generally moves faster than a crowded metro.

Period Focus What You Should See
Month 1 Audit, tracking, Google profile cleanup, fixing technical and mobile problems Call and form tracking live, a corrected profile and a clear priority list
Month 2 Service and area pages, review process, listing cleanup New pages published and a steady flow of review requests going out
Month 3 Content, local links, schema, AI-readiness checks First movement in rankings and map visibility, and early tracked leads

Be wary of anyone who promises first-page rankings in 30 days. What you can reasonably expect in the first month is visible work and working tracking.

How to Choose an SEO Company for Contractors

These questions separate real providers from sales pitches.

  1. Who will actually work on my account? Ask for names and roles.
  2. How will you handle my service area? You want a plan for profiles and pages that matches where your crews really work.
  3. How do you collect reviews? The answer should be a genuine process, never a shortcut.
  4. What will I see in the report? Calls, form leads and booked estimates should come first.
  5. Who owns my website, profile and tracking numbers? You should, in writing.
  6. What is the contract length and exit process? Be careful with long lock-ins.
  7. What do you need from me? Strong results need photos of real jobs, reviews and quick answers to questions from your side.
Check Your Licensing Rules

Many states require contractors to show their license number in advertising, including on websites and sometimes on vehicles and listings. Rules differ by state and trade, so confirm the requirements with your state licensing board and make sure your SEO company includes the right details on your pages. We build the pages, but the compliance responsibility stays with you.

Red Flag Why It Is a Problem What to Ask
Guaranteed rankings or lead numbers No one controls Google, and a guarantee is a warning sign What exactly do you guarantee in writing?
Fake addresses or virtual offices Can get your real profile suspended How do you handle a service-area business with no storefront?
Bought or incentivized reviews Breaks Google’s rules and erodes trust How do you earn real reviews from real customers?
Identical pages for every town Thin, duplicated pages rarely rank What makes each area page unique and useful?
They own your site, domain or profile You lose your assets if you leave Will we hold owner-level access to everything?
Rankings-only reports Rankings do not show whether the phone is ringing Can you show tracked calls and leads by source?

If you would like an honest read on where your business stands, we offer a free audit call where we review your website and Google profile and tell you what we would fix first. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an SEO company for contractors do?

It improves how your business appears in Google, the map results and AI answers when homeowners search for your trade in your area. The work includes your Google Business Profile, reviews, service and area pages, consistent listings, site speed, schema markup, tracking and monthly reporting on leads.

How much does a contractor SEO agency cost?

Prices vary widely by provider and market. Our published plans run from $2,000 to $5,000 per month, with local SEO and Google Business optimization included from the $3,000 Growth plan, plus a custom pay for performance option. Always ask what is included before comparing totals.

How long does SEO take to bring leads for a contractor?

Fixing a Google profile and tracking can show early movement within weeks. Meaningful growth in rankings and leads usually takes a few months, and competitive cities and trades take longer. Be cautious about anyone who promises a specific date.

What is the difference between local SEO specialists and a contractor SEO agency?

Local SEO specialists usually focus on one area, such as profiles, citations and local pages, and may work alone. An agency adds a team across content, technical work, links, tracking and reporting. Which fits depends on your size and how much you want to manage yourself.

Is SEO better than Google Ads or lead marketplaces for contractors?

They do different jobs. Ads and marketplaces bring leads quickly but stop when you stop paying, and marketplace leads are often shared. SEO is slower to start but builds an asset you own. Many contractors use SEO as the base and add paid channels for speed.

Can SEO help my business show up in ChatGPT and other AI tools?

It can help, though nobody controls what an AI tool says. The same foundation that supports local search, including a complete Google profile, consistent listings, genuine reviews, clear service pages and schema markup, is what AI tools draw on. Most people still verify with Google before calling, so both matter.

How many reviews does a contractor need?

There is no magic number. Consumers weigh the star rating, how many reviews you have and how recent they are, and trades are judged on reviews more heavily than most industries. Aim for a steady flow of fresh, specific reviews rather than a one-time burst, and reply to all of them.

Do I need a physical office to rank on Google Maps?

No. If you work at customers’ homes, you can set up a service-area profile that hides your address and lists where you work. You still need to be a real business and follow Google’s guidelines, and you should not create fake locations or use virtual offices.

How do I know whether SEO is working?

Track calls, form submissions, quote requests, booked estimates and jobs that came from organic search and your Google profile. Rankings and traffic are useful signals, but the real measure is new work. If your reports cannot show those numbers, ask for them.

The contractors who win online are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones that look like an obvious choice: a complete profile, honest reviews, clear pricing and a phone that gets answered. Good SEO makes that visible to the people searching and to the AI tools they are starting to ask.
